asked the Minister for Transport and Power in respect of each of the last three years the number of (a) British and (b) European hauliers' road vehicles which have arrived in this country by car-ferry shiping services; the quantity and value of goods (i) imported and (ii) exported on such vehicles; and the proportion of journeys in which the same vehicle carried goods in both directions.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Haulage Vehicles.
: As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it in the Official Report.
Following is the statement:
The number of licences granted over the past three years to hauliers in Britain and in Continental Europe authorising the entry to the State of commercial road vehicles engaged in haulage for reward are as follow:
Year |
British |
European |
1967 |
45 |
1 |
1968 |
88 |
33 |
1969 |
257 |
114 |
Statistics are not available of the quantity or value of goods imported or exported in such vehicles or of the proportion of journeys in which the same vehicle carried goods in both directions.
It should be noted that in many cases a licence covers only one visit so that a number of licences could be issued in a year in respect of the same vehicle. The increase in licences granted in 1969 was due mainly to the demand for the admission of refrigerated vehicles for the transport of meat exports from this country of Britain and the Continent.
