asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of money spent on arterial drainage during the past 20 years; the specific amount spent each year; and the amount to be spent this year.

The total expenditure on arterial drainage as shown in the Appropriation Accounts from 1950-51 to 1969-70 inclusive is £22,402,365. The provision for the current year is £1,881,000. The expenditure each year is given in a tabular statement which with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be published in the Official Report.

The figures quoted do not include the salaries and expenses of engineers and other staff mainly employed in head office.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary inform me as to the cost of draining the Shannon as promised by Deputy Lenihan in 1964 at the by-election? He said it would be started in three weeks time and surely is is completed by now.

He said the drainage of the Shannon would be started in three weeks time. That was six years ago and surely it is completed by now.

That is nonsense.

Mrs. Burke won the seat. The people did not believe him.
