Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Executives' Salaries.

27.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the current salary of the chief executives of those public enterprises and other State bodies under his jurisdiction.

The information sought by the Deputy is available only in relation to the chief executive of the State company under the aegis of my Department who is appointed by the Government. The only such chief executive is the managing director of Bord na Móna whose salary is £5,000 a year.

The chief executives of the other State enterprises for which I am responsible are employees of the boards who, under the relevant statutes, have sole responsibility for their appointment, remuneration and conditions of employment.

It is a matter of public interest——

Has the Deputy a question to ask?

May I inquire from the Minister if he could provide the information, which is not accessible to Deputies, and would he accept that it is a matter of public interest to know how the chief executives of such organisations as the ESB and so on, are paid?

This matter is under consideration at the moment by the review body. I am disposed to be sympathetic to the point of view expressed by the Deputy, but this is a matter that has to be worked out.
