Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Strength.

81.

andMr. G. Lynch asked the Minister for Defence the total strength of the Army at 31st March, 1948, 31st March, 1951, 31st March, 1957 and 31st March, 1970.

The total strength of the Permanent Defence Force on each of the dates mentioned was as follows:

31st March, 1948—8,539

31st March, 1951—7,880

31st March, 1957—8,846

31st March, 1970—8,574

82.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is satisfied with the present strength of the Army; and, if not, if he has any plans for increasing its strength.

The strength position of the Army is kept under frequent review with particular reference to its commitments from time to time. At present the Army is, with some difficulty, able to meet its commitments and there are no immediate special plans for an intensive recruiting campaign. Recruitment is, however, continuing in the normal way.

Is the Minister not very unhappy about a situation where it is not possible properly to guard many of our vital installations in the country at present?

I would not subscribe to that.

If the Minister will not subscribe to it publicly, he knows that it is a fact.

Would the Minister amend the regulations to permit married men with service in the FCA to go into the regular forces if they so desire?

That is a separate question.
