Vol. 248 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commercial Vehicle Drivers.

32.

asked the Minister for Labour what steps he is taking to bring into line with EEC requirements the hours of work and rest periods which drivers of commercial vehicles are obliged to observe; and whether he proposes to give financial help or other assistance to commercial hauliers to encourage them to adopt EEC requirements at an early date.

An outline of proposals for legislation on hours of work generally was published in January, 1970, as a basis for discussion with trade union, employer and other interests concerned. The views received on these proposals are at present being examined with the intention of formulating proposals for a Bill to be presented to the House in due course.

Apart from this, the question of hours of work of drivers of commercial vehicles is under review in preparation for the negotiations on the application for membership of the EEC.
