Vol. 248 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Situation.

96.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any consideration has been given to the introduction of pedestrian free ways in the centre of Dublin from which all traffic would be excluded.

This is a matter for Dublin Corporation and the Garda commissioner. The corporation's draft development plan indicates that one of the aims of the corporation "will be to remove traffic from some shopping streets and generally to encourage shoppers to park their cars outside the shopping centres by the provision of car parks adjacent to them."

97.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any consideration is at present being given to the improvement of the traffic situation in Dublin.

I would refer the Deputy to the detailed replies given on 23rd July and 30th October, 1969, to questions regarding the traffic situation in Dublin. As indicated in those replies, the improvement of the traffic situation in Dublin is primarily a matter for Dublin Corporation acting in conjunction with the other authorities concerned. I am satisfied that these authorities are fully conscious of their responsibilities and that they are taking all reasonable measures to deal with the problem bearing in mind that there is no simple once-for-all solution and that continuous attention to many aspects is, and will continue to be, necessary.
