Vol. 248 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

106.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in providing a group water scheme in Ballintarmon and Lougher, Annascaul, County Kerry.

Two group water supply schemes are proposed to serve this area. For the Lougher section the collection of the cash contributions is not completed. As the amount involved is vital to the success of the scheme, further progress cannot be made until this collection has been completed.

Preliminary costings for the scheme for Ballintarmon area indicate that it is beyond the financial resources of the group. In an effort to solve the problem, I understand that the participants have applied to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries for a grant from his Department towards that element of the scheme which involves the supply of water for agricultural purposes. My Department is in consultation with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on this aspect of the scheme.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication as to when his Department and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will reach a decision?

I cannot say at the moment.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding proposals of Mayo County Council for the further extension of the Achill Island regional water supply scheme.

The Mayo County Council's proposals for extensions to the Achill water supply scheme to serve a number of areas have been approved subject to the acquisition of the necessary land rights. A compulsory purchase order for the acquisition of some of these rights which was made by Mayo County Council is under consideration in my Department. I expect to be in a position to give a decision on it shortly.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding proposals for the Currane-Achill group water supply scheme.

A scheme for 12 houses has been carried out in this area. The scheme proceeded without consultation with my Department or the local authority and the job as carried out is completely below grant standard. I understand that a further five or six householders intend to proceed on similar lines. A representative for the latter group has been informed by my Department's local inspector of the standards expected and the procedure to be followed. In these circumstances it is not clear that any group scheme on normal lines will materialise for this area.

109.

Mr. Conlan

andMr. Fox asked the Minister for Local Government if there is a proposal before his Department for a group water scheme for Drumgill, Kingscourt, County Meath; and, if so, the present position regarding it.

A scheme for this area of County Meath was approved in March, 1967, but the group did not put the work in hands. Cavan County Council had agreed at that time to give a supply of water for the scheme but the demand on the Cavan supply has so increased since then, that the council are no longer willing to supply the group. I am arranging to have the problem further examined by my Department.

Mr. Conlan

andMr. Fox asked the Minister for Local Government if there is a proposal before his Department for a group water scheme for Kilmainhamwood, County Meath; and, if so, the present position regarding it.

A proposal for a group water supply scheme for this area is on hands in my Department. So far efforts to obtain a suitable source of supply have been unsuccessful.

The Parliamentary Secretary's Department does not appear to be very successful.

It is the efforts to obtain a suitable source of supply that have been unsuccessful.

111.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the position in regard to proposals submitted by Cork County Council concerning Charleville water supply scheme.

I have approved the county council's proposals for a water supply scheme which will augment the supply to this area.

112.

Mr. Conlan

andMr. Fox asked the Minister for Local Government if there is a proposal before his Department for a sewerage scheme for Drumconrath, County Meath; and, if so, the present position regarding it.

There are no proposals before my Department for such a scheme.

Did the Parliamentary Secretary say that there are no proposals before his Department in connection with this scheme? Is there no information whatever about any scheme for Drumconrath in his Department?

We have information that the cost of the scheme is £20,000 but that there is an inadequate supply for this scheme. It is stated that the water source is inadequate.

I presume investigations are proceeding with a view to obtaining an adequate supply for the purpose of servicing the sewerage scheme and also the new housing scheme project in that area. Is that correct?

It was confirmed by Meath County Council on 28th July that no proposals for a sewerage scheme for Drumconrath have been formulated as yet.

Is it correct to say that efforts are being made to obtain a water supply and that the Department are aware of this?

If the Parliamentary Secretary does not agree that is the case Meath County Council officials would be in serious trouble and accused of not doing their job properly, which is not true.
