Vol. 249 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Registration of Births and Deaths.

36.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that considerable inconvenience is caused to residents of Navan Road, Dublin, who have to travel to Castleknock to register births and deaths; and if he will take steps to enable such residents to register births and deaths at a more convenient centre.

I have received no complaints of inconvenience in attending the dispensary at Castleknock for the purpose of effecting registration of births and deaths.

About 95 per cent of the events occurring in that area are registered by the authorities of the institutions in which the events occur, and registration does not in these cases necessitate attendance of relatives at the dispensary. When certificates are required they may be requisitioned by post. In view of the small number of persons attending personally I do not feel that the provision of an additional registration office would be warranted.

Is the Minister aware that there is an infrequent bus service for those resident in the Navan Road area while there is a much better bus service in the opposite direction? Furthermore, people often arrive at the dispensary to be told that the register is not there, that it is at the doctor's house, and they are left with the alternative of walking approximately one mile or getting a taxi. This imposes an undue hardship on these people.

If the Deputy will give me a note I will see about the register not being available. There are, however, very few requiring certificates at this dispensary.
