Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Visit of President Nixon.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the subjects discussed when he met President Nixon of the United States of America this month.

I had an exchange of views with President Nixon on the main problems of the current international situation.

I indicated to him my views about the situation in the North of Ireland. As the talks were of a confidential nature it would be inappropriate for me to disclose details.

I wonder would the Taoiseach indicate whether or not he raised with the American President the special position of American investors in this country for whom at the moment there are beneficial arrangements under American tax laws? Did he raise with the American President the desirability of those special arrangements continuing even if Ireland joins the EEC?

That would be a separate question.

That would come under the category of disclosures of details which I am not going to do.

Perhaps I will ask the Taoiseach another question at another time.

Was there any reference at all during the discussions to the possibility of any American bases being set up in this country in the future?

I can say a categorical no to that.
