Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Press Officer.

54.

asked the Minister for Justice when he proposes to appoint a Garda press officer attached to the Garda Commissioner's Office as recommended by the Conroy Commission.

The Commissioner made a recommendation to me in relation to such an appointment on 26th October and the matter is under my active consideration.

In relation to that particular appointment may I ask the Minister if he would ensure that the press officer would be a professionally trained individual and, secondly, that he would be a member of the National Union of Journalists and that he need not necessarily be a Garda officer who was promoted or given that particular assignment? Perhaps the Minister can obtain some advice from his brother, if he is still talking to him, on that kind of procedure.

Dirty Desmond.

(Interruptions.)

I shall pass on to the next question.

I am calling Question No. 55.
