Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prison Rules Revision.

75.

asked the Minister for Justice when the rules and regulations governing prisons were last revised; and what steps are being taken to bring these regulations up to date.

The rules for the government of prisons were revised in 1947 and amended in 1955. Last year a working party of prison governors and headquarters officers was established, inter alia, to modernise the existing rules and the accounting instructions. As their main task the party have concentrated on improving the actual functioning of the service leaving the paper work for another day.

I expect that the working party will be in a position to commence their examination of the rules and accounting instructions in the near future.
