asked the Minister for Defence the number of personnel by rank on the roll of An Sluagh Muirí on 1st January of each year from 1961 to 1970.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to circulate it in the Official Report.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of officers and of other ranks serving in the Naval Service on 1st January, 1970; and the number in each category who left the service during 1969.

The number of officers and of other ranks serving in the Naval Service on the 1st January, 1970, was 32 and 339 respectively. During 1969 a total of 76 other ranks left the service including fourteen who were transferred to the Reserve Defence Force, one who was transferred to an Army unit and one who died. Five officers left the service during 1969. Two of these were subsequently appointed to the Reserve Defence Force.
