Vol. 249 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the present priority for rural electrification in west Galway.

I am informed by the ESB that the rural areas in west Galway remaining to be supplied under the rural electrification planned post-development scheme fall into two groups known as the Galway group and the Castlebar group.

In the Galway group, construction work is at present being carried out in the Kilkieran rural area; the following areas in the same group are awaiting development, namely, Roundstone, Ballyconneely, Letterfrack, Cleggan, Camus and Lettermore and it is intended that work will be carried out in that order.

The Castlebar group includes the Leenane and Cornamona rural areas in the north of west Galway. These rural areas will be canvassed simultaneously in about six months time and construction will commence about six months later.

14.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make a statement in relation to the extension of rural electrification to the Aran Isles.

The possibility of providing a supply of electricity in the Aran Islands is being examined by Aire na Gaeltachta in consultation with the islanders and the Electricity Supply Board.

15.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the reason for the delay in extending rural electrification to areas of Rahoon, Barna and Furbo, County Galway.

I am informed by the ESB that Rahoon, Barna and Furbo are included in the Spiddal Rural Area except for part of Rahoon which is in the Oughterard Rural Area. Householders in these areas have already had an opportunity of accepting supply under the Rural Electrification Planned Post-Development Programme. It will not be possible to give unconnected householders in these areas a further opportunity of taking supply until work under the Programme has been carried out in the outstanding areas in west Galway. This Programme is proceeding on a planned basis, area by area, so as to ensure that the available resources are utilised to the best possible extent.
