Vol. 249 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Student Travel.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he has had discussions with representatives of the Union of Students in Ireland regarding the operation of student holiday charters; and, if so, if he will give details of any changes or innovations on the regulations governing student travel which have already taken place or are contemplated.

Yes, I am considering suggestions made to me by representatives of the union but I have not yet come to any decision. I will come to a decision very shortly.

The Minister will recall that last July I raised this question in the House. The information which the Minister gave on that occasion was grossly misleading and was not in accordance with the facts. Subsequent to my question and the Minister's reply, the Minister received letters from the student councils of every university contradicting what the Minister had said in the House. I have copies of the correspondence.

My relations with the student travel organisations are excellent. The proposals put forward by the USIT are generally acceptable and we are just working out details at the moment. I will give a decision shortly on the basis of their submissions to me. Do not disturb the harmony, Deputy.

Could the Minister say from what organisations he has received representations? Does he propose to recognise one or two student travel organisations?

There is the USIT and the ISETA — but we will work it out.
