Vol. 249 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Television During Elections.

80.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the use made of the television medium in other countries during elections; and if he proposes to amend the electoral laws here so as to prevent the abuse or misuse of television in the country or outside it by candidates for electioneering purposes.

I am aware of the increasing use made of television in other countries during elections but, so far as this country is concerned, I do not consider that amendment of the electoral law to regulate the use of television for electioneering purposes is called for at present.

In the event of elections would commercial advertising be accepted by Telefís Éireann?

I have not got that answer with me. I could not advise the Deputy on that.

Would the Minister look into it?

If the Deputy wants me to give him that information I can certainly get it for him.
