Vol. 249 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Visit of President Nixon.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance the total cost to public funds in connection with the visit of President Nixon to this country of (a) entertainment, (b) Garda protection, (c) telephone services and (d) any other expenditure paid for by the Irish taxpayer.

To give the itemised information requested would be a breach of the established practice of not disclosing expenditure on hospitality for individual distinguished guests.

The total known costs to be met from public funds in connection with the visit of President Nixon to this country is £16,800.

Overtime worked by Garda personnel in this connection should be compensated for by time off within three months but if this is not found possible further expenditure will arise by way of overtime payments.
