Vol. 249 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Operation of Factory.

33.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the fact that a firm (name supplied) is now operating on only a skeleton staff; and what steps his Department have taken to combat this grave situation and to restore full employment.

This firm was established to produce worsted yarns for export only and I am aware that it is at present working on a restricted basis due to a recession in the British market which it supplies. I understand that this recession is of a cyclic nature and it is hoped that by the spring of 1971 there will be an upturn in trade which would restore the market for the Irish firm. In the meantime, I have been keeping in close touch with the position; I have had discussions with all the interests concerned and my Department is examining the feasibility of some suggestions for finding new markets and maintaining production even on a restricted scale until the market improves. At my request, the Industrial Development Authority are also examining the possibility of finding alternative products which would be suitable for production at the factory with a view to providing employment for the laid-off workers. I can assure the Deputy that I am actively concerned with the situation and that all efforts are being made by my Department to restore employment at the factory as soon as possible.
