asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in relation to the National Monuments Advisory Council (a) its functions; (b) the work it has carried out since its foundation; (c) its composition; and (d) the assistance, financial and otherwise, given to it by his Department.

The functions and constitution of the National Monuments Advisory Council are set out in section 21 of the National Monuments Act, 1930, as amended by section 15 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1954.

The Advisory Council has advised and assisted the Commissioners of Public Works on matters arising on or relating to the carrying into execution of the provisions of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1954, and on other matters affecting National Monuments and the protection and preservation thereof. It has also exercised the functions conferred on it by section 21 (5) of the National Monuments Act, 1930. The council consists of 27 members and is constituted in accordance with section 15 (1) of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1954.

Council members are reimbursed travelling and subsistence expenses in accordance with section 21 (6) of the National Monuments Act, 1930. Secretarial assistance and accommodation for meetings are also provided.
