Vol. 251 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Committee on Constitution.

14.

asked the Taoiseach what recommendations, if any, made in the report of the Committee on the Constitution, the Government propose to implement; if it is the Government's intention to set up a similar committee in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The position in general is still the same as set out in the reply given by me in this House to a similar question on the 8th February, 1968. It is not the Government's intention to take any steps for the setting up, in the near future, of a committee similar to that referred to in the question.

Does the Taoiseach not believe that the time has come to change some of the laws which are repellent to the religious minority in the Twenty-six Counties? Does he not believe that if some of the laws were changed it would help to allay the fears of people in the Six Counties and might lead to more harmony and understanding in the future between the people?

I dealt with that on several occasions. There is no difference between my intention and the import of the Deputy's question. I do not think there is any necessity to put it to me at this stage except to get the Deputy's name in the paper.

If the Taoiseach's intentions are so good why not deal with the matter immediately?

I will deal with it when I think the time is opportune.

Question No. 15.

Does the Taoiseach not agree——

I am calling Question No. 15.

(Interruptions.)

Would the Deputy allow Questions to continue?

He is not giving any leadership either to his own party or to the country.
