Vol. 251 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Internment without Trial.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make a further statement concerning the current situation arising from the Government's decision announced on 4th December, 1970, relating to the threatened introduction of internment without trial.

The information available to the Garda Síochána strongly suggests that the conspiracy referred to in the original Government statement has not been abandoned and that, in particular, there has been no change in the intention to kidnap. Over recent weeks, however, the information available did not indicate the imminence of an attempt at kidnapping and, in view of this, the Government have so far felt justified in refraining from bringing into operation Part II of the Offences Against the State Act, 1940. The question whether this will or will not be done depends on whether better counsels will prevail among those concerned in the conspiracy.

Can the Taoiseach state if there has been any further information in recent months or can he cite any arrests amongst members of this alleged conspiracy?

I can make no further comment other than the reply given to the question.

We hope better counsels will prevail as far as the Government are concerned as well.

All around.

Hear, hear.
