Vol. 251 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Debt.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the amount of the National Debt outstanding per person in employment in the financial years 1963-64 and 1969-70; and (b) the cost of servicing it per person in employment in the financial years 1963-64 and 1969-70.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows: (a) £539 and £943; (b) £35 and £83.

Would the Minister agree that the burden of the National Debt is now becoming a matter of concern to the Government and to the people of the country and would he not further agree that even with all the foreign borrowing the Government are doing at present the Government have the banks squeezed for all the money they can borrow from them so that the banks have no money for the private sector and firms are going bankrupt on that account?
