Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of Irish Traditional Music.

27.

asked the Minister for Education if, because of the national and cultural importance of Irish traditional music, he will reintroduce its teaching in vocational schools.

The making of provision for the teaching of Irish traditional music in vocational schools is the responsibility in the first instance of the local vocational education committees. I am prepared to approve in principle of the teaching of the subject in any vocational school in which there is a sufficient demand for classes and where the provision of the classes is proposed by the vocational education committee concerned.

In view of his welcome statement is the Minister prepared to inform the various VTA's that he will approve in principle, if proposals are forthcoming from them. Many of them seem to be lacking in this regard.

I have no objection to informing them, but I think they know it already.
