Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Crime.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the increasing incidence of undetected crime in County Cork, with special reference to the stealing of cars and robbery with violence and the constant fear under which old people are living; and what steps he proposes to take to rectify the matter.

I am not clear whether the Deputy intends the term County Cork to include the city but the position is that most of the crime in the Garda Divisions of Cork is in fact committed in the city area.

I regret that it is correct to say that in Cork, as in other parts of the country, indictable crime is increasing. The detection rate in relation to crimes against property in Cork has fluctuated very much in the last few years though the average figure is good. However, the gardaí have been concerned about the most recent trends, even though firm figures are not yet available, and they have recently held special conferences to devise ways and means to improve the situation. They hope that this will produce results.
