Vol. 251 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Movement and Transit of Animals.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how many prosecutions there have been in the last two years under section 28 of the Diseases of Animals Act, 1966; and if he is satisfied with the present legislation for the safe conveyance of animals and poultry.

The prosecution of contraventions of orders made under section 28 of the Diseases of Animals Act, 1966, is normally a matter for the Garda Síochána. I understand that statistics are not kept in such a form as to enable the information sought in the first part of the Deputy's question to be readily supplied.

I am satisfied that the provisions of the Diseases of Animals Act, 1966, relating to the movement and transit of animals are adequate. Some of the older statutory orders which are continued in force under the 1966 Act require, however, to be revised in line with modern transport developments. This is receiving attention.
