Vol. 251 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Levy.

33.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the gross amount of wheat levy collected from wheat growers in the past harvesting season; and the amount of such levy permanently retained by An Bord Gráin.

As the answer is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

1. Gross amount provisionally deducted from wheat growers (1970 harvest) at the rate of 15/- per barrel

£2,081,797

2. Amount refunded to growers after determination of statutory levy at 7/6 a barrel

£1,034,617

3. Net amount accruing to An Bord Gráin for the purpose of meeting the cost of disposing of surplus millable wheat for animal feed

£1,047,180

NOTES: The statutory levy of 7/6 per barrel was fixed on 27th October, 1970. As from 1st November, 1970, levy at this rate was deducted from growers' accounts and no refund was involved.

There is no permanent retention of the levy by An Bord Gráin.

May I ask the Minister a minor supplementary? Could the Minister tell us roughly in percentages what amount was retained by the board and not returned to the farmers?

That information will be contained in the tabular statement that will be circulated.

Has the Minister not studied that statement so that he could give me a simple answer?

The gross amount provisionally deducted from wheat growers for the 1970 harvest was £2,081,000 odd. Was that the information the Deputy wanted?

I want to know what was returned?

The amount refunded to growers? is that what the Deputy wants?

What I want to know is the percentage that was returned to the growers, the people who did the work?

It was not expressed as a percentage but I am sure that when the Deputy gets the figure he will be able to work it out himself.
