Vol. 251 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Harbour Improvements.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate his proposals for the improvement of harbours, piers and slips in Cork South-West for the current year and 1971-72.

Work will continue on the major fishery harbour centre at Castletownbere during the year 1971-72. The improvement scheme at Reen, Castletownshend is expected to be completed during the coming summer.

In the course of the debate on the Estimate for Public Works and Buildings in November last I indicated that a team set up by the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries was carrying out a survey of fishing ports and landing places in County Cork. It is now expected that the team's report will be available within the next four months or so. Pending consideration of that report it is not possible to say what further harbour, et cetera works may be carried out in the area referred to by the Deputy.

On the assumption that this report will not be available for 12 months, never mind four months, as past experience teaches us, is there any sum set aside for 1971-72 to apply to harbour and pier development works in the different areas of the country and in particular in the south west Cork area? Has the Parliamentary Secretary money in his office for development work in south west Cork for 1971-72?

That is a matter for my Estimate for 1971-72.
