Vol. 251 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Immigration Bill.

4.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if any submission has been made by the Government to the British Home Secretary concerning the forthcoming British Immigration Bill; and if he will state the contents of the submissions, if any.

I have been keeping in close touch with the appropriate British authorities regarding the legislation in question the broad outlines of which have recently been communicated to me in confidence. The text of the Bill is being published this afternoon and its implications will be studied in my Department.

Would it be possible for the Minister, at this stage, appreciating that he has received the outline of the Bill in confidence, to elaborate on the discussions that took place between the Irish Ambassador in London and the British Foreign Office on the various implications of the Bill for Irish people generally?

It would not be appropriate to elaborate on a meeting like that, but if the Deputy has a question on a specific point I shall answer him in so far as I can without having seen the text of the Bill, which, I understand, is to be published about now.

It was stated today that there will be no embargo on Irish citizens.
