asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of the period 1965 to date the number of people who died from lung cancer; and how many of them came from (a) rural and (b) urban areas.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lung Cancer Deaths.
There has been a change as from the year 1968 in the code on the international classification of diseases in accordance with which there is a variation in the recording of the statistics in which the Deputy is interested which makes it impossible for me to give him a straightforward comparison year by year from 1965 onwards as he requested. I have, however, had compiled two tables, one from 1965 to 1967 and the other for 1968 and 1969 which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. These, I trust, will give the Deputy the information and the comparison he requires. Statistics for 1970 are not yet available. The following are the tables:

Is the Minister in a position to say whether they come from rural or urban areas?
Yes, they come from rural and urban areas. The figures show, in fact, that the number of deaths in rural areas is equal to the number in urban areas.
