Vol. 251 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Director of Forensic Psychiatry.

8.

asked the Minister for Health whether the Local Appointments Commissioners have yet decided about the appointment of a director of forensic psychiatry.

The Local Appointment Commissioners have not yet made a fresh recommendation to the Dublin Health Authority for an appointment to the vacant office of Clinical Director to which the Deputy's question refers.

May I ask the Minister what it is proposed to do? Has he inquired from the Local Appointments Commissioners? Is it proposed to readvertise this post or will the next person on the list be appointed?

The Local Appointments Commissioners have not yet made up their minds. I hope they will do so soon.

In view of the fact that it is nearly six months since a decision was taken not to appoint the person who was first on the list, why has it taken the Local Appointments Commissioners so long to make this very important and necessary appointment? This appointment is most necessary in view of the high rate of adolescent delinquency in the community.

The Deputy knows that I do not inquire into the workings of the Local Appointments Commissioners.

It is about time the Minister did.

I am not going to inquire into detailed negotiations that are going on in regard to individuals who might or might not be appointed. I am not going to interfere. All I can tell the Deputy is that I have learned there are reasons for the delay, which I have accepted.
