Vol. 251 No. 14

Written Answers. - Army Selection for Overseas Service.

79.

asked the Minister for Defence the basis of selection of men for overseas service; if he is aware of the disappointment of many men at their non-selection; and what efforts are made to distribute evenly the possibilities for service overseas.

Personnel for overseas service are selected by the military authorities from lists of volunteers. In making the selections, the military authorities take into account—

(a) requirements of the United Nations;

(b) home commitments;

(c) suitability for the particular appointment;

(d) medical history and age; and

(e) conduct.

Disappointments are inevitable due to the exigencies of the service but every effort is made to provide an equal opportunity to all eligible personnel. Preference is given to suitable personnel who have not had previous service abroad.
