Vol. 252 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Immigration Bill.

15.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he proposes to make any representations to the British Government on the Immigration Bill recently introduced into the British Parliament, having regard to its effect on Irish citizens; and, if so, what representations will be made.

As indicated in reply to a question on the 24th February the implications of the Bill are being studied in my Department.

Would the Minister give us some indication as to how long it will take the Department to study the implications of this Bill, and as to how long it will be before representations are made to the British Government about the additional procedures which Irish citizens will be expected to follow in order to comply with the provisions of the Bill?

I understand there are some matters of detail to be ironed out in such representations as the Deputy envisages. However, the important matter is that the existing practice whereby Irish citizens are admitted without restriction will be maintained.

That is only a question of admission to the territory, not an admission of rights.

There are other details.
