Vol. 252 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mussel Gathering.

2.

andMr. Begley asked the Minister for Health if he will state the simple procedure by which an Irish citizen can gather mussels in a river estuary, not recommended as a completely clear area, and treat them so as to make them fit for his personal consumption.

The controls in the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950, regarding the treatment of mussels and other shellfish apply only when the shellfish are intended for sale for human consumption.

The Minister for Health or the local health authority have no functions in the matter where shellfish are being lifted by a person otherwise than for sale within the country.

A chief medical officer would, however, I am sure be prepared to advise any person in his area as to the procedure to be followed in rendering shellfish fit for human consumption.
