Vol. 252 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Experiment.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has studied the results of the traffic experiment in Fairview, Dublin, last week; if he has reached any conclusions; and if he has any statement to make.

The results of the bus lane experiment on the Fairview route last week will be assessed by Dublin Corporation's Traffic Committee. Until the assessment is completed, it would not be possible to draw precise conclusions from the experiment. However, I am glad it has been tried and I am satisfied that it will give valuable information on which to consider future traffic policy.

Is the Minister satisfied it was a failure?

It was far from being a failure.

Last week I asked the Minister if he was aware of the criticism which had occurred and since then a great deal more criticism has occurred. The Minister is in a remarkable position because there are no jams today, there were none yesterday, but there were jams last week.

We are much more concerned with traffic jams than the type of "jams" the Deputy is talking about. The Deputy should examine where the criticism is coming from.

It is coming from the public.

I am concerned with the benefit to the whole community and not to individuals who purport to represent sectional interests.

It is not so at all; it is public criticism.

Will the Minister call off the traffic wardens for the duration of the bus strike? It would be a sensible thing to do.

The enforcement of traffic regulations has been relaxed in certain cases, such as bus stops.

There was a photograph today of a car, parked at a bus stop, getting a ticket.

If the Deputy is relying on photographs for information——

What kind of evidence does the Minister need?
