asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the grave housing shortage in Ballyhaunis and Claremorris, County Mayo; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy the situation.

I understand that the Mayo County Council did not receive any replies from that area in response to their recent advertisement inviting applications from persons in need of rehousing. A scheme of six houses at Claremorris has been advertised for tenders and will, I understand, satisfy the immediate housing needs of that town.

Does the Minister appreciate that this in an area that has been very much neglected in many ways down through the years from the point of view of the Department or Mayo County Council spending money there and would the Minister see to it that there is a whip up, so to speak, in that region with a view to having——

I do not know what the Deputy is talking about because I have already said that an advertisement was placed in the local newspapers by Mayo County Council inviting persons who are in need of housing in the Ballyhaunis area to apply to them and there were no replies to the advertisement.

The Minister is confused there.
