Vol. 252 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Rail Services.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether, in view of the changed and changing traffic position in Dublin, CIE will reexamine the need for the provision of rail services to cater for Dublin North-West passengers.

As I indicated in my reply to a question by the Deputy on this subject on 29th April, 1970, an examination carried out by CIE had indicated that the demand would not justify the expense of providing commuter services on the existing main railway line running through north-west Dublin.

Since then CIE have engaged a firm of consultants to examine the passenger carrying capacity of the suburban railway systems at different levels of investment. I am informed by the board that the question of the practicability of rail commuter services for the north-western area of Dublin will be covered in the consultants' examination.

When is it likely that this firm of consultants will make their report?

I should have it certainly before the end of this year.
