Vol. 252 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rock of Cashel.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider acquiring the land adjacent to and surrounding the Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary for use as a public park.

The Commissioners of Public Works have no proposals for the establishment of a national park at Cashel.

Can the Minister say if there are any proposals for the erection of a car park in the area?

The Deputy's cousin might get a job there.

This matter is under discussion in consultation with Bord Fáilte. We have under consideration the acquisition of a suitable site which could be converted into a car park so as to provide car parking facilities for visitors to the Rock of Cashel.

The Deputy knew that was coming.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will favourably consider any proposals to restore the monuments on the Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary, to their original condition.

The National Monuments Acts, 1930 and 1954 do not empower the Commissioners of Public Works to carry out restoration work at national monuments. The introduction of new legislation to alter this position is not contemplated at present.
