Vol. 252 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo School.

34.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Education the number of pupils at present attending Creevagh national school, Carramore-Lacken, Ballina, County Mayo; the estimated number of pupils likely to be in attendance in 1973; and if he will ensure that a second teacher will be appointed there as soon as possible.

The average enrolment in Creevagh national school in the quarter ended 31st December, 1970 was 32.0. An average enrolment of 36 units is required for the appointment of a second teacher on the staff of a national school. The conditions for such an appointment do not exist in the case of Creevagh national school.

A forecast of the enrolment in future years places it at 32.0 in 1973 and indicates that it would have fallen to 24 by 1975.

As I already stated in reply to a question on the 3rd instant it is proposed to amalgamate this school with another school as from the 1st July, 1973.
