Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Supplies to B & I

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that the B & I shipping line is unable to procure Irish creamery butter for consumption on vessels covering the Cork-Swansea route; and, if so, if he will indicate why a supply is not available.

I am informed that the B & I normally procure the creamery butter required for their vessels from Irish sources but that on a single occasion recently the line's supplier in Swansea supplemented his supplies of Kerrygold minipaks with butter of non-Irish origin on the route to Cork. I understand that the line has, since the isolated occasion in question, continued to provide Irish butter exclusively on both its shipping routes.

Is the butter purchased in England or Ireland? Are they getting it cheaper in England?

The important thing is that it is Irish butter.

That is not the point.

Irish butter is smuggled in from the Six Counties.
