Vol. 252 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Westmeath Boating Facilities.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the reasons why Bord Fáilte have failed up to now to invest in expanding the boating facilities in Athlone town, County Westmeath and in the adjoining lake and river; and if he considers the proposals now mooted to be adequate.

The River Shannon is one of the 17 major resorts and resort areas designated by Bord Fáilte for development under the major resort development scheme. I am informed by Bord Fáilte that the money spent or committed by them on the river in support of projects at or near Athlone represents a reasonably proportionate share of the funds available for resort development, bearing in mind the many other worthwhile developments and promotions in other areas competing for assistance. So far the board have spent £50,000 on craft and shore facilities and marine works in Athlone and Lough Ree and this does not take account of the scheme for a new jetty in Athlone, which Bord Fáilte are undertaking jointly with Athlone Urban District Council. This scheme when completed will provide 600 feet of new mooring space and will represent a major contribution towards the provision of boating facilities in Athlone.

Will the Minister suggest to Bord Fáilte that they expand their expenditure in Athlone and provide mooring facilities south of the lough where they are urgently required?

I am in constant discussion with Bord Fáilte about this, but they must take one thing at a time and they are on a scheme already, which I referred to in my reply. I can see the merit in what the Deputy suggests for further development along these lines.

Can the Minister say where the £50,000 they have alleged to spend on Lough Ree has been spent, because it is a mystery to me?

I have it all here, but it would take too long to read out. I shall certainly furnish the Deputy with details.
