Vol. 252 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stamp Vending Machines.

52.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of stamp vending machines in the country; the proportion of these which have been converted for decimal currency; and the location of same.

Prior to decimalisation there were 275 stamp-vending machines located at 129 post offices throughout the country. These machines are not suitable for conversion for decimal coinage and are being replaced. Production difficulties experienced by the manufacturer held up the supply of the new machines and they have been installed, so far, at only five locations, namely, the General Post Office, central sorting office and An Dáil branch office in Dublin and the head post offices in Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny and Mullingar.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary agree that decimalisation was a forseeable event and would he tell us how long in advance these machines were ordered by his Department?

I have not got that information.

Would he not agree that it is highly relevant information because the excuse given would be invalidated if they were not ordered in time?

If the Deputy puts down that particular question I shall get the information.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say whether the machines are being made in this country?

I do not know.

Will he inquire into that?

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
