Vol. 252 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Coin-Operated Telephones.

52.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of coin-operated telephones in the country; the number of these which are in public telephone kiosks and post offices; and the number of public and non-public coin-operated telephones which have been converted for decimal currency.

There are 24,500 coinbox telephones; 2,540 are installed in kiosks and post offices. Up to 27th March, 10,175 coinboxes had been converted.

How many, therefore, have not yet been converted?

I shall read the answer again and the Deputy can do his own sums:

There are 24,500 coinbox telephones; 2,540 are installed in kiosks and post offices. Up to 27th March, 10,175 coinboxes had been converted.

So that there are about 15,000 yet to be converted. In view of the fact that decimalisation was a highly predictable event, could the Minister say why the equipment was not secured?

That is a separate question.
