Vol. 253 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Value Added Tax.

41.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement concerning the effect of the application of the proposed VAT to foodstuffs.

As shown in the White Paper Proposals for a Value Added Tax laid by me before the Houses of the Oireachtas on 29th March, it is proposed to apply the value added tax to foodstuffs to the same extent exactly as the turnover tax applies at present.

Could the Minister say if the value added tax applies to foodstuffs in Common Market countries?

Yes. In fact, in some it applies at a higher rate than here. Under the directive it must apply to foodstuffs.
