Vol. 253 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Industrialisation.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce how many proposals for the industrial development of Mayo towns are before his Department; and how soon these new industries will start production.

I am aware of two proposals before the Industrial Development Authority for the establishment of industries in Mayo towns. It is expected that these projects will go into production later this year.

In addition, 16 applications for grant assistance in County Mayo under the small industries programme are under consideration by the authority.

Is the Minister aware of the urgent necessity for the provision of industries in Mayo towns which are so seriously hit by unemployment? Is he further aware that in the town of Ballina, according to the figures supplied to me last week by the Minister for Social Welfare, there are now over 1,400 persons unemployed?

No crisis.

I am aware of the urgent necessity for the provision of new industries in Mayo towns and in other parts of the country and as indicated steps are being taken to deal with this as fast as possible.
