Vol. 253 No. 8

Supplementary Estimates: Leave to Introduce.

I move:

That leave be given by the Dáil to introduce the following Supplementary Estimates for the service of the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1972, namely:—

Votes Nos:—

26 (Local Government),

39 (Labour).

Tomorrow.

The Minister for Finance says that No. 4 on the Order Paper will be taken tomorrow. Could he tell us what they are about? They have not been circulated yet.

They will be circulated this evening. They relate to the provisions in regard to the £½ million coming under the Department of Local Government announced in the Budget and also the additional £200,000 for manpower. I understand it is proposed to take the Department of Labour tomorrow to cover the manpower one.

Is it not a unique situation to have a supplementary estimate introduced less than a week after the Budget?

I would not have thought so. Any provisions of this nature that are made in a budget have to be dealt with in this way.

Surely not as a supplementary estimate?

What way would the Deputy suggest?

I suggest that the Minister should have talked to the Minister for Social Welfare before they made the big mistake about the dole.

I see. The Deputy does not want us to do this.

I do not want the Minister to make the mistake again that he made a few weeks ago. The two Ministers apparently did not know what was happening. I do not know whether the Minister was playing golf, too.

We knew very well what the situation was.

What mistake is the Deputy talking about?

The Parliamentary Secretary would not know.
