Vol. 253 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jury Service.

11.

asked the Minister for Justice if there are any proposals before him regarding the introduction of legislation to improve the methods of selecting citizens for jury service; and, if so, if he will give details.

Recommendations for amendments in the jury system have been submitted in reports made by the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure. These reports, which have been presented to both Houses of the Oireachtas and published, include proposals for extending liability for jury service to a larger category of persons, and improving the methods of selecting jurors form amongst those liable. Comprehensive legislation dealing with all aspects of the jury system is being prepared but priority must necessarily be given to more urgent legislative proposals.
