Vol. 253 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - NIEC Representation.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make a progress report on the introduction of the necessary measures to ensure effective representation from the agricultural sector on the National Industrial Economic Council.

As I indicated in reply to previous Dáil questions, the Government decided on the formation, in succession to the National Industrial Economic Council, of a more broadly-based National Economic Council. The question of effecting agricultural representation on the NIEC does not arise, as the Government have terminated the mandate of that body pending the establishment of the new council which is intended to include agricultural representation. An announcement to that effect was made on the 18th January last.

Discussions with interested parties on the establishment of the new council have been in progress for some time past; these will be brought to a conclusion as soon as possible.
