asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will furnish, in the form of a reply of 29th October 1952, up-to-date information in connection with the estimated number of persons insured under the Social Welfare Acts.
The estimated number of persons insured under the Social Welfare Acts is not broken down into county areas and I am not in a position, therefore, to give the precise information sought by the Deputy. However, the estimated number of insured workers in each county and county borough as at 31st March, 1970 is given in the following tabular statement. This estimate is based on the number of insurance cards exchanged at local offices of the Department of Labour and represents the number of workers insured for all benefits under the Social Welfare Acts.
The total number of persons effectively insured under the Social Welfare Acts as at 31st March, 1970, the latest date for which figures are available, is approximately 796,000. This figure takes into account not only the number of insured workers who surrender cards, but also insured persons continuously on benefit either through unemployment or sickness and do not, therefore, surrender cards. In addition, the figure includes soldiers and contributors for widows' pension and occupational injuries benefit only, who do not surrender cards, as well as voluntary contributors, who while they surrender cards, would not be included in the tabular statement.
