Vol. 253 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Housing.

76.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange for the National Building Agency Limited to introduce tenant purchase schemes for houses let to members of the Garda Síochána.

I am not in favour of promoting a tenant purchase scheme for official houses occupied by members of the Garda Síochána. It would defeat the purpose for which official Garda houses are provided, that is, to allow of the free movement of personnel on transfer.

Is the Minister aware that other houses owned by the National Building Agency and let to people in parallel positions such as local government officials are the subject of tenant-purchase schemes? These are people who are likely to be transferred and some of the gardaí feel——

The liability for transfer in respect of other occupations would be a great deal less than it is in the Garda Síochána. That probably explains the difference.
