Vol. 253 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Park.

113.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take the appropriate initiative to ensure that Merrion Square, Dublin, is open to the general public.

No. This is a matter for the local authority to consider, if they think fit.

Would the Minister not agree that Merrion Square, Dublin, should be opened to the general public as a social and tourist amenity and would he not think it appropriate, therefore, that the Department should make some tentative approach in this regard?

If the corporation wish to take the initiative in this matter they have full powers to enable them to do so.

May I point out that, as the corporation, as such, does not exist, the Minister has an even greater obligation? In view of the public speculation about the ownership of this square, could the Minister indicate who the owner of the square is?

I believe it is the property of the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin.
