Vol. 254 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coin Denominations.

38.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will consider introducing a 20p coin to bridge the excessively large gap between the 10p and 50p coins.

I am not aware of any significant demand for the introduction of an extra coin at this stage. In any event I think it is too early to reach a decision on whether a coin between 10 new pence and 50 new pence should be added to the new decimal coinage. The question can be considered in the light of further experience of operating with the existing series of six decimal coins.

Does the Minister not consider we should have a 20p or 25p-coin? It is very awkward when one has a lot of 10p pieces in one's pocket. I have heard many people complaining.

That is one argument for an additional coin, but there is also the question, if we were to have one, should it be 20p or 25p. It is too early to assess whether it is necessary and, if so, which kind of coin is needed.

When the Minister is dealing with the question of new notes, would he consider the question of a half note?

I do not think that arises out of this question.

It is a separate question.

I have asked a question and at least I am entitled to a civil answer.

May I submit, Sir, that it does not arise out of this question?

This question relates to coins.

Question No. 39 postponed.
